| Indoor Air Quality |
| |
| First and foremost, the most important
product for indoor air quality is a good filtration
system. |

| Using a high-quality filtration system
will not only improve the quality of the air in your house, but will
also keep your evaporator (cooling coil) and ductwork much cleaner.
This will help eliminate dust mites, mold, bacteria, dirt and fungus
build up. That leads to poor performance of equipment, drain problems,
coil freezing and damage from freezing, and of couse poor indoor air
quality. |
| |
| Ultra-violet light is another source
of cleaning the air. UV lamps should be placed in an area of main duct
or equipment cabinet in order to kill mold and bacteria in the evaporator
coil and drain pan areas where it tends to grow. This method is required
in all federal government building mechanical systems. |

| Another way to improve your indoor air
quality is to pull fresh air from outside into your house through the
air conditioning system. This is a common practice in all commercial
buildings to combat "sick" building or poor indoor air quality.
Closed structures typically have much poorer air quality than the outdoor
air. Introducing outside air to the structure will improve the air quality
and help create a positive indoor pressure which will help keep outdoor
air from entering the structure thorugh cracks and openings. You want
outside air to circulate in the structure, but it should be passed through
the air conditioning system or dehumidifier or a combination of the
two in order to condition the air before introducing it into the structure. |
| |
Ways to introduce outside air into your
AC system: |
| |
- Add a duct from the return air
with a filter to an outside wall or ceiling.
- Do the same as above but add a
motorized damper and ventilation controller (Aprilaire 8126)
- Do the same as above
but pull air through a special dehumidifier and into the central
supply duct.
